10-0 Again

For the second time in the past three the Vermillion Catholic Eagles have finished the regular season 10-0

“It feels great,” VC Head Coach Russell Kuhns said. “It is a great accomplishment and all of the credit goes out to our kids and coaching staff. I’m proud of them for getting ready to go out there and play football every single week. They did what they were suppose to and all of their hard work has paid off.”

VC faced off against Ascension Episcopal Friday night and won by the final score of 42-7.

“We came out early and scored three touchdowns on our first four plays,” Kuhns said. “We just got up on them early which was good because it gave us a chance to let some of the younger kids play.”

“Getting up on them early” is a bit of an understatement.

The very first play on offense for VC was a 63 yard touchdown pass from Brennan Gallet to Connor Menard.

The offense would continue to dominate early scoring all of its 42 in the first two quarters.

“It just felt like everything was going our way,” Kuhns said.

Gallet after the first play would go on to put up solid numbers on the night.

Gallet went 14 of 17 for 255 yards and four touchdown passes.

Menard was the man recipient of the Gallet passes.

He led the team in catches with four, receiving yards with 140 and recieving touchdowns with three.

Menard averaged an outstanding 35 yards per catch.

Not to be outdone starting running back Mike Campbell had 145 yards on only eight carries.

For an average of 19 yards per carry.

He also added two scores on the ground.

According to the most recent estimated power rankings Vermilion Catholic is ranked number one and will be receiving a first round bye.

“I think this bye week will be a blessing for us,” Kuhns said. “It is much needed because it will give us a chance to rest some people and get as close to 100% healthy as we possibly can.”

Complacency with going 10-0 can and has set in for some teams, but Kuhns is confident that won’t happen with his team.

“First off I’m not going let that happen,” Kuhns said. “I’m not going let them get complacent. A lot of our kids have been here before and they know how hard it is to make it to the championship game much less win it.”

Kuhns also went on to mention that the pressure has been on his team to win a state championship for quite some now.

“It hasn’t happened in the past two seasons,” Kuhns said. “So I think our kids realize how hard it is to win a state championship, so they will prepare themselves for the long road that is ahead of them.

As mentioned before VC is almost assuredly going to receive a first round bye and will know late Sunday night  who they will possible face in the second round.

When VC does finally get to take the field it will be a home game.
