Lady Wildcats rebound with big win over Lady Pirates

The Kaplan Lady Pirates were looking to win their first district game as they hosted the Abbeville Lady Wildcats for the second time this year.

The Lady Wildcats made sure that Kaplan left wanting after winning by the large margin of 50-22.

“It’s always nice to get a win after a big loss. It’s the fastest way to get rid of that sad feeling,” Lady Wildcats Head Coach Dean Dronet said. “We came a little flat to start the game, but we stepped it up in the second half, and I’m real proud of the girls.”

Even with the Lady Wildcats coming out “flat” they still held an 11-8 lead after the end of the first quarter.

They also outscored the Lady Pirates 8-6 in the second quarter to give Abbeville the 19-14 lead heading into the halftime break.

The third quarter is where the Lady Wildcats took over the game.

Thanks to nine points in the quarter from Christina Hackshaw, the Lady Wildcats were able to go on an 18-2 run that spanned the entire third quarter, and take a commanding 37-16 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was more of the same for the Lady Wildcats as they put up 13 points in the half and held the Lady Pirates to only 6.

“We kind of let up on defense,” Lady Pirates Head Coach Courtney Hargrave said. “We know that we are working for next year, but those girls give everything they have, and I am proud of them for that.”

Caroline Touchet and Dayne Bass led the Lady Pirates in scoring with five points apiece.

Kailey Lejeune and Lauren Touchet each added four points.

Lexie Breaux was able to add three points in the second half, and Janayia Leonard got in on the scoring by adding a free throw late in the fourth quarter.

Barbara Bryant led not only the Lady Wildcats in scoring but she also scored a game high 14 points.

Christina Hackshaw was only one point off of Bryant, as she scored 13 points. Nine of Hackshaw’s 13 points came in the third quarter.

Bianca Levy was the third Lady Wildcat to score in double figures with 12 points.

Arryia Starlard and Jacqueline Braxton each added four points apiece to the final tally.

Jada Darby scored her lone three points from behind the three point line in the third quarter.

The Lady Wildcats hosted district rival Notre Dame Thursday night, and the result was not favorable for the Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Pios won by the final score of 62-31.

The first quarter it was a close game with Notre Dame holding a slight lead of 17-15.

After that it was all Lady Pios. Notre Dame would go on to outscore the Lady Wildcats 45-16 in the last three quarters of the game.

Barbara Bryant was the only Lady Wildcat to score in double-digits with 10 points. Along with her 10 points Bryant also had five rbound in the game.

Arryia Starlard and Jacqueline Braxton each were able to score seven and six respectively. Braxton also led the team in rebounds with eight. Starlard was also able to grab four rebounds and had two assists.

Christina Hackshaw and Bianca Levy rounded out the scoring with five and three points apiece, she was also able to pull down seven boards as well.
