Delcambre High Softball field gets vandalized over the weekend

Saturday morning it was discovered that someone tried to give the Delcambre softball field a new paint job, due to  vandalism. By the afternoon, Delcambre residents had the vandalism painted over and the field was back to normal.

Delcambre assistant coaches arrived at the softball field and discovered “Go Erath”  “Go Abbeville,”  “Erath Rocks” and vulgar language spray painted on the center field fence, inside  one dugout and on the grass in the field.

The “D” on the center field fence was spray painted with an “X.”

A combination of a pressure washer and new paint had the dugout and center fence in tip top shape within hours of the discovery.

“I have a great group of parents along with those in the community,” said Delcambre softball coach Roderick Morgan. “By that afternoon they had it all cleaned up.”

Morgan said his players worked hard to get the field in great shape.

“We take pride in our field,”  Morgan added. “This was a childish prank.  It turned my stomach.”

Delcambre Police Chief James Broussard  said he has suspects but did not release any names. Two white cans of spray paint were discovered.  The chief did not say if the suspects are from Erath or Abbeville.

Delcambre High Athletic Director Darcy Delcambre added, “It was disappointing to see this. “It’s upsetting to the coaches  and those who take care of the field.”

Abbeville High Principal Ivy Landry was saddened to hear about the spray painting.  When school begins today, he will check with his coaches to see if they hear anything from students, who may have done this.

Abbeville High has not played Delcambre in softball in more than five years, so he was puzzled to learn that “Go Abbeville” was spray painted on the center field fence.
