Abbeville man arrested by State Police during traffic stop

An Abbeville man, who is a part-time Gueydan police officer, was arrested by the Louisiana State Police during a traffic stop.
State Police arrested Kenneth Martin while he was off duty this week for charges relating to possession with the intent to distribute marijuana and other narcotics.
Shortly after 11:40 a.m. Thursday, Troopers stopped a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer, driven by 26-year-old Kenneth Martin of Abbeville for a traffic violation on 3rd Street west of LA Highway 35 in Kaplan.
During the stop, Troopers observed marijuana inside of the vehicle. Martin was placed under arrest and a search of his vehicle was conducted. Troopers recovered about one half ounce of marijuana, 19 hydrocodone pills, a semi-automatic handgun and an opened bottle of liquor.
Martin was booked into the Vermilion Parish Jail for a vehicle equipment violation, possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute a schedule III narcotic, open alcoholic container, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance and obstruction of justice.
The Gueydan Police Department has released a statement about their officer who was arrested on drug charges yesterday.
Part-time officer Kenneth Martin’s “actions are neither condoned nor acceptable,” Chief Kayla Henry said in a statement. She continued, “The officers at Gueydan Police Department and I would like to thank the State Police for their professionalism and commend them for a job well done.”
Martin was hired on Dec. 4, 2012 by previous administration as a full time police officer, according to Martin’s statement. He was placed as a part-time officer, working on an “as needed only” basis on Aug. 4, 2013. Since then, he worked about 30 hours over three occasions.
