Dozier Elementary hosts Friday Night Frenzy

With a goal to help fourth grade Dozier Elementary students relax, read, and enjoy the school environment prior to upcoming LEAP testing, “Friday Night Frenzy” was held in the school’s cafeteria on Friday, February 21, 2014 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM. The reading based event was a reinvented form of the school’s past Friday Night Prime Time Reading program that was held annually throughout the nineties.

The Friday Night Frenzy program was spearheaded by Dozier Elementary Counselor Shelanne Richard, Librarian Schuyler Poche’ and Enrichment teacher Karen Bodin. Fourth grade teachers including Lori Porter, Maleigha Viator, Amanda Hebert and Kay Lurry also played a vital role in helping with props, setting up and assisting that night.
Silent reading periods, exercise fun, games, guest readers, snacks and a unique “We are Paw-some” photo booth were all part of the night’s fun.

Students returned in their pajamas at 7:00 PM and brought books to read, a sleeping bag, pillow, and snacks. Each student was allowed to bring one parent to enjoy the event with them.

Three special guest readers were invited to entertain to the group with fun filed stories. The special guests included former Dozier Elementary Principal Teddy Broussard, and his daughter Amy Broussard LeBlanc, who is currently a speech teacher at Breaux Bridge High School. The third guest reader was Claudette LaCour, who served on the Town Council for a number of years, and is a long time member of the Erath 4th of July Association.

Broussard read “A Bad Case of the Stripes” by David Shannon, while LeBlanc read “Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears: A West African Tale” by Verna Aardema. LaCour read “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister.

As students, guests, parents and teachers left the rejuvenated program at 9:00 PM, they had the same reaction as from the former program. No matter which decade, both programs (Friday Night Prime Time and Friday Night Frenzy) definitely had common threads binding the two. Evident at the end of both through the years, were fun times tied to reading, relaxed students, and a trail of smiles, as they headed home with memories that will last a lifetime.
