Patriots overpower Pirates

The last time the North Vermilion Patriots and Kaplan Pirates faced off was during the Parish Tournament Championship game, and Kaplan was able to pull off the razor thin win.

This time around the Patriots would have no part in a close game as they took control of the game from the very beginning and never looked back.

All season long the Patriots have had issues with getting off to quick starts, in this game that was not a problem.

“We got off to a quick start,” Patriots Head Coach Jack LeBlanc said. “We had talked about it all week long. We knew that Kaplan was a very good and talented team. They made some runs and we were able to withstand that and make our own run. It was a
good win and even better that it was a district win.

The Patriots scored 16 points in the first quarter and only allowed Kaplan to score 10.

The second quarter was a little more evenly matched as the Pirates won the quarter 9-8, but found themselves down 24-19, headed into the second half.

The third quarter saw the Patriots extend their lead to seven by outscoring the Pirates 12-10 in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter is where the Patriots really inserted their dominance and just left the Pirates in the dust.

To start the fourth quarter the Patriots went on a 10-2 run in the first five minutes of the quarter.

The Patriots would go on to win the fourth quarter 18-6, and the game 54-35.

“We just got beat,” Pirates Head Coach Jeff Davis said. “They were the better team. That’s all.”

Mike Bessard led the way for the Patriots in scoring with 14 points.

Eight of Bessard’s 14 points came in the first quarter.

Jordan Windmon was able to add 11 to the Patriots final tally.

Donald Comeaux hit three three-pointers to give him nine points scored in the game.

Nick Cooper and Tre Levy added six and four points apiece.

Jawuan Windmon and Terrance Collis each added four and two points respectively.

Devantae Davis scored a team and game high 15 points for the Kaplan Pirates.

Blake Touchet was the only other Pirate to score in double digits with 10.

Kaylon Rudd, Brady Mott, and Darius Jordan all got in on the offensive action, for the Pirates, as they added four, three and two points respectively.

Joseph White rounded out the scoring for the Pirates with his made free throw in the second quarter.
