Hebert named new Erath High School principal

ERATH — Jed Hebert of Lafayette Parish was named the new principal at Erath High School on Thursday.

Hebert, 47, and two other candidates were interviewed by school board personnel Thursday morning. The other two were Eva Lois Broussard, a teacher at Gueydan High School, along with Larry Savery, who is an assistant principal at West Jefferson High School in New Orleans.

The interviews began at 9 a.m. and all three gave a power-point presentation and answered questions.

After incoming school superintendent Jerome Puyau and assistant superintendent Charlotte Waguespack met with teachers at Erath High at 2 p.m. on Thursday, the decision in the central office was made.

School Superintendent Randy Schexnayder, who now has the power to hire and fire school employees instead of the school board, went with Hebert.

Hebert is the only candidate who has principal experience. Hebert is presently the principal at Katherine Drexel Elementary in Broussard.

Before applying for the principal position, he also applied for the assistant principal position at Erath High.

Francis Touchet, the former Erath High principal, has been knowing Hebert since their college football days. The two men played football for USL at the same time in the late 1980s.

They also coached together at

Abbeville High in the early 1990s. Touchet was the defensive coordinator and Hebert coached the defensive line.

The two have stayed friends the last 20 years.

“Hiring him is a great fit for Erath High,” said Touchet. “He is a people person. I am excited for the kids and the parents.”

Touchet said Hebert has the knowledge to take Erath High to the next level.

He will not be only new face in the front office.

Sandy Huval was named the new Erath High assistant principal last month.

Huval brings to Erath High 15 years in education, including 13.5 years in Lafayette Parish (8 at Lafayette High) and the two and half years working for the Louisiana State Department of Education as the Louisiana Virtual School (LVS) Program Administrator.

She also taught at Northside High, N.P Moss Middle and was an assistant principal at Scott Middle School for two years before leaving for a state job.

Touchet said he plans to meet with Hebert and Huval in the next few days and educate them on the ins and outs of Erath High School.
