White Castle makes rare trip to Abbeville

The Abbeville Wildcats are stepping out of district tonight to play a Class A team that is not a cupcake.
The Wildcats (3-5) entertain the White Castle Bulldogs, who are 4-4 overall.
White Castle and Abbeville have not met in years. They found each other when Abbeville head coach Gary Adkins was at a coaching clinic in Baton Rouge. He ran into his friend Edd Thomas, who is the head coach of White Castle.
Thomas told Adkins he had an open date for Week 9 and Adkins also had an open date. The two agreed to play each other.
White Castle is a Class A school on the west side of the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge.
Last year they posed an 8-4 record, however, this year they are 4-4. They are in the same district as Southern Lab and Kentwood.
Abbeville will not be the first Class 4A team White Castle plays this year. White Castle beat Class 4A Belaire 32-14. They have also beaten Class 3A Donaldsonville (40-34).
In the past two weeks, White Castle fell to Kentwood (40-20) and Southern Lab (22-12).
Thomas said his team does not do anything fancy. They like to play smash mouth football and run.
Thomas watched at least three films on Abbeville and he was impressed.
“They have some good size kids,” said Thomas. “It looks like they do not have a lot of kids who go both ways. That is the big advantage of being a Class 4A school. As a 1A school, we have many players who go both ways. If two players get hurt, we lose four. We have to stay healthy.”
After starting the year 3-2, the Wildcats have now lost three straight games. Abbeville, who is in Class 4A, has never played a Class A team this year.
The Wildcats’ offense has been struggling the last three games.
Abbeville has scored no more than 8 points a game the last three games.
Fullback Matt Johnson and Kavon Brown share touches in the backfield. Johnson has 458 yards on 63 carries and he scored 10 TDs.
Brown has 343 yards on 65 touches.
Jose Pedroza is getting more touches in the last two games. This season he has 56 carries for 206 yards.
