VC moves on to quarterfinals

Lady Eagles beat Ascension Catholic 67-39, in second round match-up

The VC Lady Eagles faced off against the Ascension Catholic Lady Bulldogs, on Tuesday night, in the second round of the 1A State Championship Playoffs.

What looked as though it was going to be a close game at the end of the first quarter quickly turned into a rout.

The Lady Eagles were able to win the second round match-up by 28 points, 67-39.

“I thought we came out ready to play,” Lady Eagles Head Coach Kim Guidry said. “We wanted to step up the defense, and we did. We also wanted to keep them under 40 points, and we did that as well. I thought it was a great effort.”

The Lady Eagles only had a slim four point lead heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Eagles just took over in the second half and ran away with the game.

By the end of the second quarter the Lady Eagles had widened that lead to 11, and when the fourth quarter rolled around the Lady Eagles had a 23 point lead.

This marks the second straight playoff game the Lady Eagles have won by 25 plus point.

Senior Katie Frith led the Lady Eagles in scoring with a team and game high 23 point.

Frith also led the team in rebounds with eight.

Ashailee Brailey was on Frith’s heels by scoring 20 points.

Kaylen Collins was the only other Lady Eagle to score in double digits with 11.

48 of the 54 points that Frith, Brailey and Collins scored came in the first three quarters.

Ellen Langlinais and Kelly White got in on the scoring with seven and four points respectively.

Leah Camel rounded out the scoring for the Lady Eagles with two points.

Camel led the Lady Eagles in steals with four on the night.

VC also found themselves playing a more physical style of basketball against Ascension Catholic.

As a result a couple of the girls were a little “banged up” according to coach Guidry, but she is hopeful that the team will be at 100 percent when the team suits up for their quarterfinal match-up against the fifth seeded Arcadia on Thursday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night at the Kim “Gidge” Guidry Gymnasium on VC’s campus.
