VC Lady Eagles need to beat Honeybears in Gueydan

GUEYDAN - There is a lot riding on the Vermilion Catholic/Gueydan girls game on Friday.
The game will be played in Gueydan, starting at 6 p.m. and the boys game will follow.
The Lady Eagles (23-4) enter the game tied for first place in District 7-1A with a 12-1 record. They are tied with Lafayette Christian Academy (22-7), who also has a 12-1 record.
The Honeybears are 9-4 in district and 18-7 overall.
While Gueydan has no chance of winning the district, they can be the spoilers for the Lady Eagles in the final regular season game for both teams.
If VC beats Gueydan and LCA beats Centerville on Friday, VC and LCA complete the regular season as co-district champs. The two teams will have to play Saturday to break the tie.
The game will be held, if needed, at North Vermilion High at 4 p.m. The winner gets a full point in power point standings.
The Lady Eagles are seated No. 2 in the latest Class 1A power point ranking. Gueydan is No. 5.
Gueydan can put a kink in VC’s district plans by beating them on Friday. If they do, then the Lady Eagles would finish in second place in district and drop in power point standings from No. 2 to No. 4, No. 5 or No. 6. LCA would jump ahead of VC.
If Gueydan wins, it should remain in the top five of next week’s final power point ranking.
“There is a lot to play for,” said Gueydan head coach Randall Bertrand. “I expect it to be a playoff atmosphere and the gym to be packed with people. Vermilion Catholic is coming to town.”
Vermilion Catholic head coach Kim Guidry expects the atmosphere of Friday’s game to be upbeat.
“We have to go play them in Gueydan and I expect them to be a competitive opponent,” said Guidry. “Right now I want to play to a team like Gueydan right before the playoffs.”
VC enters the game averaging 45 points a game. Gueydan is scoring 43 points a game.
The Honeybears are not 100 percent for Friday’s game.
Bertrand is keeping his fingers crossed that one of his top players, Ashari Terry, will be able to play in the playoffs. Terry hurt her knee last week. This week she is expected to get her knee tested. Bertrand is praying she does not need surgery.
Kendra Petry will step in to replace Terry in the starting line up. She is averaging 4 points a game.
The Lady Eagles enter the game after beating Central Catholic 54-27 on Tuesday. Jay Demouchet scored 18 and Bella Doucet had 12 for VC. Haley Faulk came off the bench and scored 10.
The Lady Eagles enter the game healthy.
The projected starting lineup for VC is: Demouchet, Leah Camel, Meredith Stutes, Kelly White and Bella Doucet.
The projected starting lineup for Gueydan is Nya Boudreaux, Ke’Ara Charles, T’Nia Leger, Cheyenne Lacomb and Petry.
