VC Lady Eagles move on to second round of playoffs

The Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles began slow but then finished strong against the Highland Baptist Bears in the first round of the Class 1A softball playoffs.
The Lady Eagles (18-5) scored seven runs in its final three innings to beat Highland, 10-0, at home.
VC will play No. 10 St. John of Plaquemine on Thursday in Abbeville. St. John beat Oberlin, 8-5, on Monday.
Game time is at 4:30 p.m. If the game is cancelled because of rain, then it will be moved to Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Lady Eagles and Highland played the first two innings scoreless.
“It took us a while to start hitting,” said VC coach Jesse Faulk. “We hit the ball well in practice this week. After we got going, we did well.”
VC scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, thanks to back-to-back doubles.
Kelsey Mitchell led off the bottom of the third inning with a double, and Ainsley Mallet brought her home with a double of her own. Bella Doucet ripped a hard ground ball up the middle that score Mallet.
The Lady Eagles tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Mary Meaux led off the inning with a walk and would later score on a sac fly by Michel. When the inning was over, VC led 5-0. They added four more runs in the fifth inning and one in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bella Doucet paced VC at the plate. She went 3-for-4 and knocked in a run. Sadie Boudreaux was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Meaux went 1-for-2 and scored twice. Ainsley Mallet was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
VC pitcher Taylor Abshire pitched all six innings and gave up only three hits.
