VC edges Lady Patriots, take parish crown

Lady Eagles win tournament for fourth straight year

For the fourth year in a row, the Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles won the parish tournament, this time with a 42-35 win over North Vermilion.
It was a hard-fought game by both teams, but the VC duo of seniors Ashailee Brailey and Kaylen Collins boosted the team to the victory,
“I think our kids showed control down the line,” said head coach Kim Guidry. “We controlled the ball, therefore we could control the game. Knowing that we had to make free throws down the stretch; to me, was the key point.”
North Vermilion jumped ahead of VC 9-2, but the Lady Eagles responded with a 10-0 run to lead 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, but a solid second quarter gave North Vermilion a two-point lead going into halftime.
The teams battled back and forth, and in the fourth quarter, free throws and solid plays by Leah Camel, Brailey and Collins helped the seniors win their fourth straight championship.
“It just says a lot about our program,” Guidry said. “It’s a compliment to the kids that have come through our program and the hard work and dedication they put in.”
Brailey led the team with 15 points to go along with four steals.
Collins earned 10 points, and grabbed five rebounds. Camel scored 6.
Morgan Harrington scored 16 for North Vermilion. Lanie Breaux and Lunden Graham each scored 6.
“I think the parish has improved,” said Guidry. “I thought playing North Vermilion would make us better. I told them in the last timeout, no matter what, these are the kind of games we to need to be in because these are the games that will get us ready for February.”
The Lady Eagles will be on the road against St. Edmund Friday, and North Vermilion will be in the Midland Tournament Dec.17-20.
