VC’s Chris Sagrera signs with UT-Tyler

Vermilion Catholic’s Chris Sagrera signed a letter of intent to pitch at the University of Texas at Tyler.
The 6-foot-3-inch right hander will join a program that has had only one losing season in the last 11 years.
“It feels great,” said Sagrera. “I’m really excited to get the opportunity to play ball at the next level.”
The senior said he chose to go to become a Patriot after visiting the campus.
Coaching Sagrera in Tyler, will be Vermilion Catholic alumnus, Chris Bertrand.
“I think the biggest thing for us is we feel that the upside that Chris has is what really attracted him to us,” Bertrand said. “We’re all aware that in the past he’s went through some different things as far as some arm rehab and he’s battled his way through a couple of different health issues, but for us, the fact that he is 6-foot-3 and he’s long, lean, he comes from an athletic family and his arm when healthy is going to be a fresh arm, we just think that the upside and the ceiling that he has is tremendous.”
Bertrand said he expects Sagrera to make an impact early on because he possesses the ability to be successful agianst left and right-handed hitters. He said Sagrera’s ability to consistently use a change-up would cause teams problems.
Although Bertrand does not in Vermilion Parish anymore, he expressed recruiting an Abbeville/VC product meant something to him.
“It (Sagrera signing) means a ton because I’ve always admired the brand of baseball that’s played in the area,” he said. “I’ve always really had a supreme admiration for the way my childhood in the city of Abbeville at Vermilion Catholic within the game of baseball really shaped me into why I get a chance to do what I do.
“You couple that with how much respect I have for Steven Adams, to me it means everything.”
