Cajuns’ baseball back at No. 1

Coming off of a Sun Belt Tournament Championship, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team found itself back on top of the national rankings this week earning the top spot in the Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and USA Today Coaches polls.
The top ranking is the first ever in program history for the Cajuns (53-7) in the Baseball America and USA Today polls. Louisiana has been ranked No. 1 for three weeks already this season in the Collegiate Baseball rankings.
The Ragin’ Cajuns hold the nation’s best record and longest win streak headed into the NCAA Tournament at 10 games. Louisiana moved up one spot in each of the three polls and collected 19 first place votes in the coaches poll.
Both the NCBWA and Perfect Game have yet to release updated polls this week. The No. 1 ranking comes on the heels of the Ragin’ Cajuns first ever national seed taking the sixth spot out of eight national seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Blake Trahan played a large part in the Cajuns success lately as he was named one of six Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week after being named the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Trahan’s homer in the seventh inning lifted the Ragin’ Cajuns to a 6-5 win over UT Arlington in the championship game of the Sun Belt tournament. In four games during the tournament, he was 7-for-11 with 1 home run, 1 double, 2 triples and 5 RBI.
Louisiana returns to action this weekend with a 6 p.m. contest against fourth-seeded Jackson State in the first round of the Lafayette Regional at M.L. “Tigue” Field Friday. Mississippi State and San Diego State are the other two teams competing in the Lafayette Regional.
