Track season nears end with district meet
The 2014 Vermilion Parish track season has led up to this one event, the district track meets.
They are being held all around the parish this afternoon.
Vermilion Catholic and Gueydan’s district 7-1A track meet is being held at Bill Gooch Athletic Complex in Abbeville.
Delcambre’s district 5-2A track meet is being held at Delcambre’s track and field.
Then the district 6-3A, consisting of Abbeville, Erath, Kaplan and North Vermilion, will be held at Robert J. Sagura Stadium in Erath.
All of the meets will follow the same format, field events start at 3 p.m. and the track events will begin at 6 p.m.
This track meet is arguably the most important meet of the season because only the top for in each event will move on to the Regional track meet next week.
“All or nothing is going to be the name of the game,” Erath boys head track coach Kerry Richard said. “Since only the top four qualify for regionals, everyone is going to have to give everything they have to make sure they are in the top four.”
For some coaches being at home is a big help for one of the biggest meets of the season.
“You always want to be at home for something as important as this meet,” Delcambre boys head track coach Darcy Delcambre said. “You always want the kids to do what they are capable of, and I feel that if our kids perform at the level they are capable of, we will have a bunch qualifying for the regional track meet. Being at home always help them perform the best that they can.”
Hosting a track meet is a great thing, but sometimes it can have a negative effect as well.
“It is always nice to be able to host the track meet,” Richard said. “At the same time, I’m not the biggest fan because it takes a little away from me being a coach. This is one of the biggest day of the track season and I can’t just focus on the kids, I also have to focus on getting the field ready. Luckily, I have a great crew and I think we will have a great day.”
Again, all of the meets will follow the same pattern, filed events start at 3 p.m. and track events will begin at 6 p.m.
If you get the chance make sure you go out and check out some of the great track action.
