Summer baseball is underway in Abbeville
Youth summer baseball has finally gotten underway in Abbeville.
The opening ceremony for the 2014 season got underway this past Saturday out at A.A. Comeaux park, and everyone involved seemed very excited to get the season underway.
Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza threw out the ceremonial first pitch, to signify the beginning of the baseball season in Abbeville.
“Our biggest fear was that we were not going to be able to have a summer league,” Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said. “We were able to put this league together in a short amount of time, thanks to the parents who volunteered to help coach and organize the league. It is a tremendous event for the city of Abbeville’s sports program.”
According to the Mayor the summer league was able to have more than 150 kids sign up for the summer league.
“This just goes to show you that there are a lot of kids that want to play in a summer league,” Piazza said. “Some of them may not have been able to play in All-stars or in some of the travel ball tournaments, but there are obviously a lot of kids that want to play summer league and this gives them the opportunity to do just that.”
The summer program is also a great chance for some of the kids of Abbeville to play , that might not have had any other opportunities to play baseball.
“We have reached kids that probably wouldn’t have been able to play otherwise,” Piazza said. “Anytime you can reach children, that is a great thing.”
The summer leagues has gotten underway and there will be plenty of opportunities for you to check out some of the great baseball action that will be taking place at A.A. Comeaux park all summer long.
