South Plaquemine too much for Gueydan
The saying says that you can’t teach speed, and the Gueydan Bears experienced it first-hand Friday evening at the Vermilion Parish Jamboree.
The Bears faced a South Plaquemine's team filled with athletes, and it was tough for Gueydan to overcome, as they fell 30-0. The more athletic Hurricanes put on an offensive show in the first half doing all of there scoring then.
Gueydan’s defense held down the fort in the second half holding South Plaquemines scoreless.
“I’m pretty proud of my guys,” said Gueydan coach Jay Landry. “We kept playing hard after getting ourselves down in a hole early. We didn’t fall to pieces, and we played them even in the second half.”
A bright spot for the Bears was their rushing attack. A unit that was struggled much of last season produced 59 yards rushing. Leading the team with 30 rushing yards was Corey Romero.
The Bears won’t play too many teams like the caliber of South Plaquemines, but Landry talked about what it takes to upset a team like that.
“We have to be technically sound, and we have to play mistake-free football.”
The Bears have time to lick their wounds before they host South Cameron in their opener.
