Pony Express rolls
THIBODAUX — The Erath Bobcats are now 1-0 at Nicholls State Stadium thanks to the help of the Pony Express.
The Pony Express is made up junior running back Elijah Mitchell and senior Scott Moore. The two young men combined to rush for 294 yards and scored four touchdowns in Erath’s 44-30 victory over South Plaquemines High School.
The game was played at Nicholls because it was considered the midway point between South Plaquemines and Erath.
With the win, Erath improves to 5-2 overall.
Mitchell rushed for 153 yards and scored 20 points. Moore, on the other hand, rushed for a season-high 140 yards and scored 14 points.
Erath had a total of 285 yards on the ground, compared to South Plaquemines, who had 253 yards.
The Bobcats, who had never played the Hurricanes, fell behind 8-7 in the first quarter and 24-22 at halftime.
The Bobcats regained the lead in the third period when quarterback Ben Leblanc completed his only pass of the night to tight end Jaylen Sinigel for a 3-yard touchdown. Dylan Floris nailed the extra point to put Erath ahead, 29-24.
The Hurricanes came right back and retook the lead, 30-29.
The Bobcats answered a 62-yard touchdown run by Mitchell. Mitchell converted the two-point conversion to make it a 37-30 game.
Moore secured the game with an 80-yard touchdown with 1:57 to play in the game. Safety Bren Faulk intercepted a pass on the previous South Plaquemines possession to set up Moore’s big run.
The Bobcats did fumble the ball three times in the game.
EHS is on the road again Friday against district leader Patterson.
