Pirates able to bounce back

The Kaplan Pirates suffered a tough triple overtime loss to West St. Mary on Tuesday, and were really hoping to get back on the winning track Friday night against the Erath Bobcats.

Pirates were able to bounce back in a big way, with a big 47-33 victory over the Erath Bobcats.

“They (Erath) played very well tonight,” Pirates Head Coach Jeff Davis said. “We (Kaplan) just played sloppy. Defensively we played flat footed, but we were able to get it back together. We have always been a second half team and that is when we got it back, I’m proud of them for battling back the way they did.”

It was senior night for the Pirates, and they were able to feed off of the energy in the gym and get off to a quick start.

The Pirates scored 17 points in the opening quarter, thanks to the starting five that consisted of all seniors.

Kaylon Rudd and Jordan Touchet led the way for the Pirates in the first quarter as they both scored six points each.

The second and third quarter is where the Pirates started to play “sloppy” according to coach Davis.

The Bobcats were able to close the gap in the second and third quarters.

They brought the deficit down from 12 points to only seven points.

Early in the fourth quarter they were poised to make another run and close the gap even further, but the play of the Pirates big three; Jalen Bates, Blake Touchet and Devante Davis, stopped any momentum the Bobcats had.

The big three for Kaplan scored all 13 points for the Pirates in the final quarter.

Scoring for the Pirates: Devante Davis 13, Blake Touchet 10, Kaylon Rudd 8, Jalen Bates 8, Jordan Touchet 6, Darius Jordan 2.

Scoring for the Bobcats: Aaron Greene 11, Elijah Mitchell 6, Alec Toups 6, Jeremiah Mitchell 6, Zach Campos 4.

Both Erath and Kaplan have two remaining games left.

The Bobcats are at home for both games against West St. Mary and North Vermilion.

The Pirates have to travel to both Abbeville and Notre Dame to finish the season.
