Patriots’ solid pitching beat Pirates

The North Vermilion Patriots and the Kaplan Pirates squared off for the first of two games this week on Tuesday, and the Patriots won the first game by the final score of 2-0.

“It was a tough one. They (Kaplan) played a really good game,” Patriots Head Coach Jeremy Trahan said. “We didn’t necessarily hit the ball real well today. That pitcher (Rhett Gaspard) they threw, I think did a great job. We just played really good
defense, and pitched really well.”

Donald Comeaux led the way for the Patriots on both the mound and at the plate.

Comeaux started the game on the mound and threw six solid innings.

In his time on the mound, Comeaux struck out seven Pirates batters and allowed only four hits.

His record now stands at a perfect 5-0 on the season.

At the plate, Comeaux was 1-for-3 with a two RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Taylor Abshire would come in and pitch a perfect seventh inning to pick up his first save of the year.

It was a pitchers dual, as Rhett Gaspard, starting pitcher for the Pirates, only allowed two earned runs.

Gaspard along with those two runs only gave up four hits and struck out six Patriots.

“We lost because we had the bases loaded in two innings and just couldn’t get the run in,” Pirates Head Coach Cam Taulli said. “Our pitcher (Gaspard) did a really good job on the mound. Donlad’s (Comeaux) offspeed stuff, especially his curveball,
was just on today. The one thing I hope the team takes away from this is that one mistake can cost you the game. Other than that, I’m really proud of the way our team played today.”

These two teams have a quick turn around before they have to meet up again.

They face off again today at 5:30, only this time the game is being held at Kaplan.
