North Vermilion wins a shootout, 41-40

OPELOUSAS - The North Vermilion Patriots held on to win a 41-40 shootout against Northwest on Friday on the road.
The Patriots had 368 yards of offense, but the NV defense gave up 500 yards.
Northwest had 352 yards of offense on the ground and 148 in the air.
Chris Lee rushed for 320 yards for Northwest.
NV quarterback Dade Dieterich rushed for 97 yards on seven carries, and he scored a touchdown.
Dylan Dent had 17 carries for 55 yards and he scored twice.
In the air, Dieterich had a season-best 207 yards of offense. He completed 7-out-11 for 207 yards and one touchdown.
The Patriots jumped out to a 13-0 lead on the Raiders in the first period. Dent scored from the 7, but the extra point kick was no good.
Four minutes into the game, NV led 6-0.
The Patriots went to the air on their next touchdown. Dieterich completed a 53-yard pass to Dent, and Connor Dupuy nailed the extra point for a 13-0 lead.
Back came Northwest behind the running of Lee, who put his team ahead 14-13 with three minutes to go in the second half.
The Patriots retook the lead 30 seconds after the Raiders tied it. Dent had a 17-yard TD run and Dupuy nailed the extra point.
Right before halftime, Dieterich showed off his speed with a 72-yard touchdown run to make it 27-14.
However, with Lee at running back, the Raiders were not out of the game.
Northwest scored back-to-back touchdowns to tie 27-27 in the third period.
Special teams helped the Patriots right after Northwest tied it. Dupuy took the ensuing kickoff and ran back 75 yards for a touchdown. He also kicked the extra point to put his team ahead 34-27 in the third frame.
Northwest did not waste anytime tying the game. On the ensuing kickoff after NV went ahead 34-27, Raiders’ return man Abraham Goodwin ran it back 78 yards for a score.
Just like that, it was 34-34.
The Patriots took their final lead of the game on Castro’s 8-yard run. Dupuy nailed the extra point, which would be the difference in the game.
Back came Northwest and it marched down field to score early in the fourth period. Down 41-40, Northwest kicker missed the extra point, which turned out to be the difference in the game.
Dupuy kicked five extra points, had a 75 yard kick off return for a score and caught three passes for 73 yards.
Gaven Becker had two catches for 78 yards for NV.
North Vermilion opens district play Friday on the road against Erath. It will be Erath’s homecoming game.

WELSH - The Abbeville Wildcats fell behind 14-0 in the first period and went on to lose 48-15 in road game on Friday.
The Wildcats got on the score board in the second quarter on Matt Johnson’s 11 run. Billy Arceneaux nailed the extra point to put the Wildcats (1-3) in the game a minute into the second period.
But the Greyhounds would follow with six straight touchdowns to put the game out of reach.
Johnson scored a late fourth-quarter touchdown with four minutes to go in the game, He ran it from 6 yards out and Kavon Brown scored on a two point run.
Johnson was held to only 32 yards on 13 carries. Kavon Brown (8-22) also had carries.
Brown had three catches for 52 yards, while Johnson had 2 for 29.
AHS quarterback DeMarcus Collins completed 6 out-of -11 passes for 89 yards.
Abbeville is at home Friday against South Plaquemine.
