North Vermilion blanks St. Thomas Aquinas 3-0

The North Vermilion baseball team continued its tear on the competition with a 3-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas at M.L “Tigue” Moore Field Monday afternoon.

North Vermilion (17-3, 2-0) earned timely hits and pitcher Donald Comeaux showed why he was worth a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a one-hit performance to lead the Patriots to their 11th straight win.

“Their pitcher threw a lot of strikes,” said North Vermilion head coach Jeremy Trahan. “They made plays defensively just like us. It’s just that we were able to get a few key hits in the right moments and Donald threw extremely well today, which held them at bay. It helped us even though we didn’t hit the ball how we should have.”

North Vermilion’s first points came in the bottom of the third inning after Seth Patin earned a leadoff triple to left field.

The next batter, Connor Dupuy, hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Patin to give the Patriots a 1-0 advantage.

Comeaux and Falcons’ pitcher Alex Egan had a pitchers’ duel going, with each thrower retiring batters in bunches. In the top of the fifth inning, the Falcons gave Comeaux his only true threat of the game.

St. Thomas Aquinas had runners on first and second with no outs. Patriot catcher Charles Galluser ended the scoring threat with a foul-tip catch at home plate followed by a rifle throw to second base to get the Falcon runner for a double play.

Comeaux struck out the next batter to get out of the jam.

North Vermilion first baseman Ryan Thompson gave the Patriots the 3-0 cushion with a single to right field that scored two runs.

Comeaux struck out eight in the game with only one walk. He said it felt good giving a little preview of what’s to come when he dons vermilion and white for the Cajuns next year.

“It felt good,” he said. “I just wanted to pitch for the coaches because they came and watched. I just did my best and threw strikes. Our defense was great. It’s been good this year and we just get timely hitting with two outs.”

Thompson finished the game 2-3 with 2RBIs and Dupuy went 1-2 with a RBI.

Trahan said it was a plus that his team earned the win despite not playing its best game.

“You’re not going to come out with your best stuff every day,” he said. “If you can scratch out a win, it’s good.”

The Patriots will put their win streak on the line Thursday when they travel to face Opelousas Catholic.
