No. 8 Vermilion Catholic downs Gueydan 9-2

The Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles softball team picked up its sixth win in seven games with a 9-2 home victory over district rival Gueydan Tuesday evening.

VC (10-5, 7-2) scored multiple runs in several innings and pitcher Taylor Abshire kept a solid-hitting Honeybear squad at bay to get the win.

“I thought it was a complete team effort,” said VC head coach Kim Guidry. “I thought we were hitting the ball well and to keep them to only two runs is an accomplishment because Gueydan can hit the ball. I thought our defense stepped up.”

Gueydan (9-11, 2-7) got on the board in the top of the first inning to gain a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to pull ahead.

A two-out single to center field by Lexi Langlinais drove in two runs to give the Lady Eagles a 4-1 advantage.

After a leadoff triple by Alli Broussard in the bottom of the third, Haley Faulk sent a shot to the fence for a double that brought Broussard in to score.

The points continued to pile up for VC as third baseman Leah Camel doubled to right field put the Lady Eagles ahead 6-1 and catcher Caroline David extended the lead to 7-1 with an RBI two batters later.

Gueydan’s Lindsey Vidallier cut the the deficit to 7-2 with an RBI single in the fifth.

Camel and David each earned another RBI to put VC up 9-2.

“I think we reacted to their start of the game,” Guidry said. She got a good hit in the first inning. You’re going to have those; you just have to battle back and score runs and I thought we answered that at the plate.”

Faulk went 3-3 with an RBI. Camel  scored three runs while going 2-3 with 2RBIs.

David went 1-4 with 2RBIs. Broussard with 2-3 with a run scored.

Abshire pitched six innings allowing two runs on five hits with four strike outs. Broussard closed the game on the mound for VC.

The Lady Eagles are currently No. 8 in the Class 1A softball power rankings, despite starting the season later than most teams because of the basketball team’s championship appearance.

Guidry said her team is developing at the right time.

“I think we’re starting to roll,” she said. “We always start later than everybody else in our district because of basketball, so it takes us a little while to generate our momentum and right now is the time we want to be peaking. We want to get better. We’re in the top 10, so as long as we can have a home game; in the playoffs, anything can happen.”

VC will face Highland Baptist and GHS will host Hanson Thursday.
