No 8 Catholic High travels to Abbeville to battle No. 4 VC on Thursday
One way to find out how good your team is early in the season is to play the No. 8th ranked team in Class 2A - the Catholic High Panthers.
The Panthers are coming off a successful 2014 season after reaching the Class 2A Select State Championship.
“This will be a good test for us,” said VC head coach Russell Kuhns. “We like to schedule tough opponents in non district games. We like to see where we are at and look to get better each week. If you make a mistake against a team like this, the kids will learn.”
Catholic High Head Coach Brent Indest also enjoys playing No. 4 VC in the first game tonight at 7 p.m..
“It is always a good, competitive game,” said Indest. “It is the kind of game that gets us ready for the rest of the season.”
In the last two meetings, both have split with Catholic High winning last year.
The 2015 CHS Panthers have graduated many players from last year’s team, including their stud quarterback Josh Pellerin, who signed with Ole Miss.
This year the Panthers enter tonight’s game with a sophomore quarterback, getting his first start at a varsity game.
CHS quarterback Diallo Landry only attempted three passes in the jamboree game against Central Catholic of Morgan City. Catholic High cruised to an easy win.
What Catholic High did do is hand the ball off to its running backs. Seth Pierre led the Panthers with 120 yards and scored two touchdowns against Central Catholic. Catholic High also had two other running backs run for 60 total yards.
Kuhns said despite Catholic High losing its quarterback, the Panthers are still a very good team.
“Anytime you do not have the quarterback like Pellerin, naturally you are going to be a different team,” Kuhns added. “Pellerin is a special athlete and a good football player. But Catholic High is still a good team with their fullback (Pierre) and Catholic High’s new quarterback is still an athlete. They still have plenty of athletes on the field that can hurt you in different ways.”
The 2015 Vermilion Catholic team has thrown for more than 500 yards over the last two weeks.
Quarterback Hunter Frith, who is coming off a 3,000 yard passing year for VC, is expected to put the football in the air tonight.
Catholic High’s defense is solid. It held Central Catholic, which is picked as the second best team in VC’s district, to negative yards in the jamboree.
Pierre is also Catholic High’s top defender. He had two interceptions against Central Catholic.
Indest said this week he has been preparing his team for VC’s passing game. He said VC’s receivers are fast, which makes them dangerous.
VC’s top receivers returning are Tyler Derouen, Emile Trahan and Payton Trahan.
