Lady Wildcats avenge early loss to Lady Bobcats
Friday night's Abbeville Lady Wildcat basketball team looked a whole lot different than the Lady Wildcat team that lost to the Erath High Lady Bobcats three weeks ago.
For starters, Friday night's AHS team had its head coach Summer Campbell on the sidelines. In the loss to Erath last month, Campbell missed the game due to illness.
Second, Abbeville's 6-foot-2 center Jackie Braxton was not able to play the first time because she was also ill. This past Friday, while she only scored two points, she pulled down more than 10 rebounds.
This time when the two teams met in a showdown in Erath, the combination of having those two things helped the Lady Wildcats nip Erath 39-36.
“The difference was that we had all of our players, including me being here tonight,” said Campbell after the win. “Also, the mentality of the team was different. We wanted to take control of the game early, and we did that. We also wanted to take Monette (Bolden) out of her game by not letting her drive to the basket. We did that.”
The Lady Wildcats had two girls taking turns guarding Bolden man-to-man the entire game. She still finished with 18 points but she also fouled out with 1:30 left in the game with Abbeville leading 36-32.
With just under six minutes to play, Abbeville took the lead for good. The fourth period came down to a free throw shooting contest for both teams.
Erath did not score a bucket in the fourth period until the final shot of the game. Erath missed 11 out of 12 shots from the floor in the fourth quarter.
The third quarter was not much better as Erath was a dismal 4-for-15 shooting. The one thing that helped Erath stay in the game was that Abbeville wasn't doing much better making baskets in the second half.
Abbeville shot 1-for-9 in the fourth period and 4-for-18 in the second half.
Lady Wildcats' Jada Darby had the hot hand in the game, making four 3-pointers for a team-high 12 points. She showed emotion after making each three pointer.
“We wanted revenge,” said Darby. “They came to our place and beat us, so we wanted to do the same.”
At the charity stripe, Abbeville's Arrayia Starland scored eight points. Other Abbeville scorers were Evelyn Briggs with 6, followed by Daijah Darby (6), Timia Jackie (4), Jackie Braxton and Raven Boudreaux each had two points.
Gabby Harrington made 14 for EHS, while Alexis Lege had 3 and Olivia Blanchard added one.
Abbeville Boys.......54
Erath ….....................35
The Abbeville Wildcats outscored Erath 34-14 in the second half and cruised to a 54-35 district win.
Erath actually led 21-20 at halftime but could only score three points in the third period.
Drevian Evens had 14 and Isaiah Antoine scored 12 to lead AHS.
Abbeville had eight players score. They were Kevin Williams (5), Clyde Mitchell (9), Matthew Johnson (2), Jourdon Brookes (3), Jahidi White (3) and Clements Dorsey (6).
For Erath, Bren Faulk had 11 points – all scored in the first half. Elijah Mitchell had 10. Jaylen Sinegal came off the bench and scored 8, while Ross Bares made six.
