Lady Pirates softball tournament gets underway

The Kaplan Lady Pirates are hosting a softball tournament that gets underway today.

Joining the Lady Pirates in the Kaplan Softball Tournament are Catholic N.I., Berwick, Iowa, Delcambre and Erath.

Kaplan softball coach Shay Herpin is excited about the tournament, and expects it to be a good turnout.

“I like to play good teams,” Herpin said. “That’s what makes us (Kaplan Lady Pirates) better, is to play good teams, and that is exactly what we have in everyone coming to this tournament. Along with making us better as a team, all of these teams
should bring a large crowd, and provide the fans some good softball action.”

Along with an early season test of the Lady Pirates, this tournament is also a bit of a fundraiser.

More importantly is the fact that this tournament will help gage where the Lady Pirates are as far as their softball team goes.

“I have never been a big win/loss guy,” Herpin said. “Of course I want to win, but I believe that if you play good teams and get better each and every day, then the wins and losses will sort themselves out.”

Along with getting better each and every day, coach Herpin knows that this is a team game and you win and lose as a team.

“It is a total team effort,” Herpin said. “I don’t ask individual players to step up; I ask the entire team to step up. We need everyone if we are going to win, and reach the goals that we have set for ourselves.”

The Kaplan tournament gets underway this afternoon.
