Lady Pirates coast into second round

The Kaplan Lady Pirates squared off against the Abbeville Lady Wildcats in the first round of the Class-3A State Championship playoff tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Pirates were able to win handily by the final score of 12-2 in six innings.
This win marks the third time this season that the Lady Pirates have beaten the Lady Wildcats.
On the mound for the Lady Pirates was Lindsey Schexnailder, and she pitched all six innings and only allowed two runs on five hits. She also managed to strike out four Lady Wildcat batters.
“I wanted to make sure that Lindsey (Schexnailder) got some playoff experience on the mound,” Lady Pirates Head Coach Shay Herpin said. “She pitched a good game, and proved that she is a big asset for us on the mound.”
Leading the way at the plate, were Schexnailder, Abby Trahan and Kailey Lejeune.
All three of them had two hits and drove in two runs apiece.
Now the Lady Pirates have to play the waiting game, as they will have to wait for tonight’s games to be over before they know who they will play.
They will be matched up against the winner of the Pine Prairie- Caldwell Parish game.
“We learned a lot from last year’s playoffs,” Herpin said. “We came out flat last year, and we learned that we have to keep ourselves busy. We are going to do some intersquad work, and just try to make practice as close to a game like atmosphere as we can.
“It doesn’t matter who we play. We know that we have to play our best because whoever we play is going to give us everything they have.”
