Lady Patriots win 3 straight, edge Abbeville
For the third time this season, the North Vermilion Lady Patriots and Abbeville Lady Wildcats battled, and for the second time this season, North Vermilion came out victorious.
In their first matchup in district play, the Lady Patriots overcame 15 turnovers to win their third straight district game.
“I thought the toughness that we showed to stay with it was a positive,” said North Vermilion head coach Casey Meador. “I don’t think we played well for even a couple minutes at a time, but sometimes you have to win games like that.”
The Lady Patriots led the game 17-14 at halftime. In the third quarter, North Vermilion went on a 7-0 burst to extend their lead to eight points with 4:10 left.
Abbeville responded, and cut the deficit to 28-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, North Vermilion exposed weaknesses in the Lady Wildcats’ zone defense, and were able to get easy buckets to keep Abbeville out of striking distance.
Lanie Breaux was the leading scorer for North Vermilion with 12 points.
Other North Vermilion scorers were: Simone Pillette (9), Morgan Harrington (8), Emily Faulk (4), Cassidy Hoffpauir (2) and Kaylee Lopez (2).
Arrayia Starland was the game-high scorer with 15 points.
Other Abbeville point producers were: Timia Briggs (7), Eliza Chambers (3), Daijha Darby (2), Raven Boudreaux (2) and Evelyn Briggs (2).
“It sets up where our destiny is in our hands,” Meador said. “Can we show up and play and take advantage of the things we need to take advantage of. Can we find confidence in those three wins to help us play well in the future.”
Abbeville travels to play Notre Dame Tuesday, and North Vermilion will host West St. Mary.
