Lady Eagles kick off season at home

After earning a 25-4 record last season, the Vermilion Catholic girl’s basketball season tips off tonight at home against Teurlings Catholic High School.
Teurlings, normally a solid 4A school, should prove to be a good opening test to the season for VC.
“The idea is to schedule teams that are good that will make us better,” said head coach Kim Guidry. “We use these games as preparation for later in the season.”
Vermilion Catholic enters the season after losing two starters to graduation.
This year’s team is looking to build on the success of last year’s team, who lost in the quarterfinals by three points to Arcadia High School.
Members of the 2012-13 championship team Ashailee Brailey and Kaylen Collins, now seniors, are expected to play a huge role in the team’s success this season.
“Last year was a good year, but every team that does not win the championship has to keep working,” Guidry said. “If you want to beat the teams like Arcadia, we have to get better.”
First on the schedule for VC is the Teurlings Catholic Lady Rebels. Teurlings finished last season with a 16-12 record, which earned them the No. 32 seed in the Class 4A playoffs.
Matched up against No. 1 Salmen High School, Teurlings was dominated and sent home.
The Lady Eagles hope to start off on a winning note that could propel them into the Saint Thomas More tournament Nov. 24-26.
