Lady Bobcats need OT to pull out victory

The Erath Lady Bobcats heading into the game against the Kaplan Lady Pirates on Monday night had three games remaining on the schedule, and being ranked 30th in the power rankings meant that they needed every win they could get to stay
inside the top 32.

The Lady Bobcats was able to get the much needed victory, but it was a hard fought version that needed overtime that concluded with the Lady Bobcats winning 33-28.

The name of the game for both teams was defense.

From the opening tip the defense for both teams was playing some of the best defensive basketball they have played all year long.

“Our girls have finally figured out how to play great team defense,” Lady Pirates Head Coach Courtney Hargrave said. “That is a tribute to them just working hard and listening. We just put it all together. All the credit goes to them for working hard.”

Erath had the one point advantage of 9-8 heading into the halftime advantage.

The fourth quarter is when the game would pick up.

Kaplan took its first lead of the game late in the fourth quarter as Lauren Touchet made a 15 foot jump shot to give Kaplan the 20-19 advantage.

After both teams went back and forth, the Lady Pirates found themselves up 25-22 with only 18 seconds left in the game.

The Lady Bobcats drove the ball down the court and with 13 seconds left on the clock Ashley Dubois would hit a three to tie the ball game up at 25 and send it into overtime.

Gabby Harrington would start the overtime period off with a layup giving the Lady Bobcats a 27-25 advantage.

Kaplan would go on to make three of the six it attempted in the overtime period, whereas Erath would make six of eight.

Alexis Harrington made all six of her free throw attempts in the overtime period.

“Kaplan gave us a great game. They did their job tonight, and almost took us out of our running,” Erath Head Coach Andrea Bernard said. “As always defense our strong point. It’s what wins us games. Our biggest problem is we just missed too
many layups. That’s something we need to work on.”
