Kaplan goes for six straight win, face Erath
A battle between two of the top three teams in District 6-3A will take place tonight when the Erath Bobcats travel to play the Kaplan Pirates.
Both teams have had their ups and downs so far this season, and Kaplan is still on the upswing.
Kaplan (5-2, 2-0) is on a five-game win streak. The Pirates easily disposed of West St. Mary last week 48-7, and in the process rushed for over 300 yards for the fourth consecutive game.
Jade Herpin leads the Kaplan offense that averages 26 points per game. So far this season, Herpin has thrown for 140 yards and one touchdown.
Kaplan goes as far as the Wing-T rushing attack can take them, and up to this point, it has taken them far.
Julius Johnson leads the area with 667 yards, with rushing touchdowns. The Pirates have a rushing attack of three other players: Grant Frick, Justin Stoute and Darren Istre, who are at the top of the leaderboard in rushing yards in the area.
Kaplan’s defense has been formiddable during the 2014 season. The defense is allowing only 13.4 points per contest led by Arizona State commit Jalen Bates, Kerry Kass and Nigel Pascual.
Erath (3-4, 1-1) enters the game after a 41-0 loss at home against Notre Dame last week.
The Bobcats had been on a three-game win streak before that loss.
Erath’s success depends on the tandem of quarterback Ben LeBlanc and tailback Elijah Mitchell, coupled with the offensive line.
The Bobcat offense averages 19 points per game after seven games.
The defense has struggled at times, surrendering an average of 29 points per contest.
So far this season, LeBlanc has thrown for 927 yards and 10 touchdowns. Mitchell is second in the area with 635 yards and eight total touchdowns.
Receiver Ross Granger is LeBlanc’s favorite target. On the year, Granger has 23 receptions for 457 yards and five touchdowns.
This is a game between two teams battling for the possible top spot in the district, as they are both looking to take the crown from reigning champion Notre Dame.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m tonight.
