Kaplan carries momentum into Friday
The Kaplan Pirates carry the momentum from a dominant win into their homecoming game versus Iowa.
An impressive 32-6 victory over the Westminster Crusaders after an 0-2 start with losses to Lafayette High and Church Point , was just what the team needed moving forward.
"We cleaned up our act a little bit," said head coach Stephen Lotief. "We played a little bit better."
In fact the Pirates played a whole lot better, scoring 32 points after being held scoreless in the first two games. Daniel Lotief, filling in for the injured Jade Herpin at quarterback, went 4-5 for 87 yards, and scored a rushing touchdown.
Herpin is not expected to play against Iowa, so look for Daniel to get his third consecutive start at quarterback.
Kaplan rushed for 337 yards, led by Darren Istre with 103 yards on 7 attempts. Julius Johnson rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries, and Grant Frick rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns on 8 touches.
The Iowa Yellowjackets stroll into the game with an undefeated record, and have outscored their opponents 80-23 in their three-game winning streak.
Iowa is dangerous on both sides of the ball with an offense averaging over 26 points per game, and a defense that gives up a shade under 7 points per contest.
"Iowa is good," said Lotief. "They are probably the best team we are going to play. They are explosive on offense, and they have a suffocating defense. We are going to have to play our best game to win no doubt."
