Honey Bears prepare for Southern Lab

The Gueydan Honey Bears are gearing up to take on Southern Lab in the first round of the 1A State Championship Playoff Tournament.

The Honey Bears finished the season with a 15-12 overall record and a 6-6 record in district play.

Their regular season was good enough to land them in the 26th spot in the playoff tournament.

“They are very excited about going to the playoffs for a second year in a row,” Honey Bears Randall Bertrand said. “I just have been telling the team that they can’t worry about their (Southern Lab’s) record because now that we have hit playoff
mode, records mean nothing.”

Southern Lab enters this game as the eighth seed with a 20-4 overall record.

If the Honey Bears are to win this round one patch-up, they are going to need to see some big play from their young stars of freshmen Ke’ara Charles and eighth-grader Ashari Terry.

Coach Bertrand is a little concerned about his young team traveling.

“A young team on the road traveling is never really a good thing,” Bertrand said. “They get so excited and anxious about the game on the way over that they aren’t ready to play by the time the game starts. It’s my job to just try and remind them that this is like every other away game we have played this year.

“We have a smart team though, and at this point I’m more worried about traffic than I am the girls. They will be ready to play.”

Tip-off is scheduled for Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Southern Lab.
