Gueydan ends 30-game losing streak with win
GUEYDAN - It was a great night in Gueydan this past Friday night.
For starters, the Bears football team ended a 30-game losing streak that dates back three years. The Bears ran over Ascension Christian 32-20 in front of Gueydan fans.
The Bears ran for 253 yards and threw for another 24 yards. The Gueydan defense held Ascension to 94 yards on the ground and 126 in the air.
Then, it was also first-year head coach Robert Helo’s first ever win a high school football coach. He took over the program this summer.
“This is a big win for us,” said Helo. “To start off the year with a W gives the players so much confidence. We prepared for them and the players are able to see that hard work pays off.”
The game was close for the first half, with Gueydan leading only 14-6. But that all changed in the third period when the Bears scored 18 points.
Cade Sonnier, Trevor Ladelle and Mark Clark had touchdowns in the third quarter.
The Bears shared the wealth in the back field with four players. Ladelle scored two touchdowns and ran for 74 yards on 10 carries.
Sonnier had nine carries for 74 yards and one touchdown.
Mark Clark had 7 totes for 56 yards, and he scored a touchdown.
Holden Guidry tacked on 9 carries for 38 yards.
Quarterback Randy Lepretre threw 5 passes and completed two for 24 yards.
Clark had an 11-yard catch, and Anthony Levy had a 13-yard reception.
The Bears will try to extend their winning ways by travelling to Grand Lake on Friday.
