Erath Lady Bobcats get big win against New Iberia Senior High School

ERATH - The Erath Lady Bobcats jumped out to a big lead against the New Iberia Senior High Lady Yellowjackets and then hung on to win 44-38.
The Lady Bobcats (11-2), fresh off their first-ever parish title, were without their head coach, Andrea Bernard and assistant coach Tim Lege against the Class 5A Lady YellowJackets.
Bernard had a healthy baby girl that morning and Lege was coaching the middle school team at the same time.
First year assistant coach Dana Mouton Frederick was in charge and did fine. Frederick, who helped Erath reach the Sweet 16 as a player in the early 1990s, stood the entire game, with boys coach Tommie Pillette sitting by her side.
“I wasn’t nervous,” said Frederick “This was a good win for the program.”
Erath used its home gym advantage and jumped on NISH 7-0 before it scored any points. Those points were free throws. NISH did not make a bucket in the first period and went 0-for-9 shooting and were down 12-4 at the end of the first period.
NISH was down 21-11 at halftime. They still had trouble shooting the basketball in the second period and only made three buckets. In the first half, NISH was 3 for 17 from the floor, while EHS was 8 for 30.
The Lady Jackets began to make baskets and cut the lead down to 25-17 with 5:45 to play in the third frame.
Erath’s Monette Bolden made two free throws to put EHS ahead by 10 again.
The lead stayed at 10 points until the fourth period when NISH made a push.
They cut the lead to seven points with five minutes to play in the game.
The Lady Bobcats could not buy a basket in the fourth quarter. They went 0-for-8 from the field. EHS was going to have to win the game at the charity stripe.
NISH got within four points, 40-36, of Erath with 2:30 to play in the game.
The Lady Bobcats went to the free throw line and made five out of eight free throws in the final three minutes to hold off NISH. In the fourth quarter, EHS was 6 out of 10 from the line.
Gabby Harrington finished with 13 points. Bolden led with 17. Alexis Lege had nine. Logan Goutierrez came off the bench and scored five.
While EHS won the game, it looks like they have lost a starter. Senior Hannah Soileau, who averages 4 points and 6 rebounds a game, went down early in the third period with a hurt leg.
Erath will be back in action tonight in Kaplan to open district.
