EHS’s Mitchell runs for season-high 192 yards

It was only a matter of time until Erath sophomore tailback Elijah Mitchell had a dominating game.
On Friday against the Abbeville Wildcats, he had that game EHS fans have been waiting for.
Mitchell, who is a second cousin to AHS greats Jason and Brandon Mitchell, ran for a season-high 192 yards in Erath’s 49-29 win against Abbeville.
The 192 yards now gives him just over 600 yards rushing on the season, which is not bad considering he missed a game and a half because of a back and ankle injury.
Coming into the game, Mitchell said he was hoping he would have a decent game. On his first three touches on the opening drive, Mitchell had 22 yards. By carry No. 9 in the first quarter, he went over the 100-yard mark.
“I have to give credit to the people who helped me get the yards,” said Mitchell. “The offensive line did a great job opening holes. My fullbacks also did well tonight. They opened up the holes for me.”
Scott Moore and Matt Anderson are the two fullbacks for EHS. Their job, when they are not carrying the pigskin, is to create a hole for Mitchell to run through. Often times, they never get to see Mitchell’s entire run, because they are blocking a linebacker or lineman.
“It’s pretty exciting to know I get a big block and he (Mitchell) has a big play,” said Moore. “When he has a big run, it’s good to know I had a hand in it.”
Mitchell’s longest run of the night was 22 yards.
By halftime, he had 154 yards rushing.
Erath head coach David Comeaux is enjoying watching his running back get healthier.
“Each week he is getting better,” said Comeaux. “I still do not even think he has scratched the surface. I am happy for him and how well he played against Abbeville.”
Comeaux compared Mitchell to Chicago Bears running back Michael Ford. Ford is from Leesville and played for LSU in 2011-12.
“Elijah has the eyes, the quickness and has power. He runs a lot stronger than his size,” said Comeaux.
