Claire Meyers continues the family tradition; signs with Cajuns

Claire Meyers will continue the Meyers family tradition of playing sports for the UL-Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.
Her father, Kevin, played baseball for the Cajuns in the mid 1980s, along with her uncle, Ken.
Now Claire, a graduating senior from North Vermilion, will wear red when she puts on her next track uniform.
She signed a track scholarship to throw the javelin for the Cajuns.
The three-sport athlete from NV is looking forward to keeping up with the Meyers’ tradition.
“I am excited to be a Ragin’ Cajun and follow in my dad’s footsteps,” said Claire. “It has always been a dream to compete at the next level, and being able to do it at UL is the icing on the cake.
“I am ready for the next challenge.”
For the last four years, Meyers has played volleyball, softball and competed in field events in track.
This season for the Lady Patriots, she threw the javelin, along with the shot put and discus. In district, she won the discus and javelin title.
She went to state in the javelin this year and finished third.
Claire will join former teammate Chelcie Sonnier, who is a member of the Cajuns track team, and throws the javelin.
“I would like to thank all of my former coaches, but especially Mya Touchet for believing in me and pushing me at every meet this year.”
Touchet, NV’s track coach, said Claire will excel at the next level.
“Claire is not just a track athlete,” said Touchet. “She is a competitor at whatever she does. She was a three-sport athlete at our school and extremely successful in each of those sports. She likes to win and it’s that hunger for winning that will help her succeed, because Claire does not know how to settle for anything less.”
Touchet said the Cajuns will be “gaining a huge asset with Claire.”
With Claire graduating, Touchet admits she is sad to see her leave NV. “I could not be more proud of her,” Touchet said.
