Cashen Relays get off and running

Friday marks the running of the 49th annual Cashen Relays and the 40th Koenig Relays held at Delcambre high school starting at 3:30 p.m.
The Cashen Relays is the name of the boys track meet, and the Koenig Relays is the name of the girls meet, but they are run at the same time, on the same track.
“A lot of thanks go out to the area schools,” Delcambre head track coach Darcy Delcambre said. “I’m glad to see that a lot of the area schools are going to be coming to the relays, if not all of them. I think it is going to be a good night.”
Vermilion Parish will be well represented in the Cashen Relays.
Abbeville, Delcambre, Erath, Gueydan, Kaplan, North Vermilion and Vermilion Catholic will all be taking part in the Cashen and Koenig Relays.
Joining them will be Loreauville, AES, and ESA.
“It’s good to be able to be at home,” Delcambre said. “I’m glad the parents will get to see their kids and not have to travel. I expect it to be a pretty good meet for everyone involved. The only issues we may have is with the weather.”
The forecast for Friday does call for about 40 percent chance of rain.
If the track meet is postponed on Friday it will be moved to Monday afternoon at the same time.
“It puts a strain on the coaches,” Delcambre said. “Especially with the weather playing a big factor. Hosting a track meet like this is hard, but rewarding work. Every team in the parish goes through this. I’m just glad that we are able to put it on.”
The field events are set to begin a 3:30 p.m., and the track events will take place right after.
