Breaux Bridge downs Abbeville

The Abbeville Wildcats’ offense could never get it going Friday against the Breaux Bridge Tigers.
Abbeville had a total of 58 yards of offense in its 30-8 district loss against the Tigers.
The Wildcats (3-4, 0-2 in district) had a total of 18 yards on the ground and 84 yards through the air. It equals out to 102 yards of total offense.
On the other hand, Breaux Bridge had 151 yards rushing and 149 through the air to finish the game with 300 yards of offense.
Abbeville High head coach Gary Adkins said he was a little puzzled by the way the Wildcats played.
“We did not come out and get excited,” said Adkins. “I told them at halftime to reflect on the North Vermilion game and how excited y’all were to play the game. They practice five days a week. You need to be ready to play on Friday. Maybe because we were playing Breaux Bridge and they were intimidated.”
The Wildcats took their opening possession and went 45 yards and marched down to the Breaux Bridge 15-yard line. It was second down and 9 from the 15, then the wagon wheel fell off for Abbeville.
A delay of game penalty (minus five yards) on AHS, and the next two plays were for minus 14 yards. Before the Wildcats knew it, they were at the 40 and having to punt the football.
Breaux Bridge scored on its next two possessions for a 13-0 lead.
Three times the Wildcats had Breaux Bridge facing a fourth down and twice the Tigers turned fourth down into a touchdowns.
At half, Abbeville was only down 16-0. They also only had 30 yards in total offense.
The Tigers took their opening second half drive and scored seven points. Breaux Bridge faced a fourth down and 7 from the AHS 25. They not only got the first down, they also scored to make it 23-0.
After stopping Breaux Bridge and forcing them to punt, Abbeville put together its best drive of the game.
The Wildcats started back on their 14-yard line and went 86 yards in 14 plays. The drive took eight minutes off the clock.
After missing most of the first half with an injury, Jose Pedroza returned to the back field and had a couple of big runs.
Kavon Brown, who led Abbeville with 18 yards rushing, caught a 33-yard pass from quarterback Demarcus Collins that put Abbeville three yards from the endzone.
Matt Johnson scored from the 3. Johnson caught a pass from Collins for the 2-point conversion.
The reason Abbeville had so few rushing yards is because Collins finished with minus 27 yards rushing.
He completed three passes for 48 yards.
Johnson had a 28-yard reception and Brown had three catches for 54 yards. Dominick Nunez had a catch for two yards for AHS.
Abbeville is back in action Thursday with a home against district foe St. Martinville.
