Boys and girls club; advancing childrens lives through sports

The Boys and Girls Club of Abbeville is trying to teach the children of Abbeville important life lessons, and one of the ways they attempt to reach the children is through the playing of sports.
“We try to use sports as a way to show the kids that you can stay active and healthy, and have fun at the same time,” Roland Levine, Unit Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Abbeville said. “Sports is very important for the kids because it teaches them how to work with others, how to interact in a stressful situation and on top of that they learn these things without knowing that they are learning them.
“Also, another great thing that the sports in our five core areas is it helps the kids stay active. We feel that if we can keep them active in sports, they will stay active in those sports long after they leave here, and because of that they will lead long and successful lives.”
On top of enriching children’s lives via sports they are also giving the parents some peace of mind.
“The club being open gives the parents the peace of mind, that their kids are in a safe place,” Levine said. “We do several programs with the children. We have five core areas that we do with the children, Education, Art, Health and life skills, sports and character and leadership. We try to make sure the kids are having fun and learning something all at the same time.”
Levine knows just how much the Boys and Girls Club can reach a child because he is the product of the Boys and Girls Club.
“I grew up in this building,” Levine said. “This place helped me out, and kept me out of trouble. So, it feels good to be able to give back to the kids of Abbeville. We are trying to open their minds up and sports is one of the ways that we do that.”
