Abbeville hopes to upset Notre Dame
Abbeville is still in search of its first win, and it will be a tough task, when they travel to play district leader Notre Dame.
Abbeville (0-7, 0-2) is winless, but have come awfully close to winning two games this year. The Wildcats lost on the last play of the game in week 4 against the Port Barre Red Devils. They lost to North Vermilion last week thanks to a touchdown with 58 seconds left.
Despite the winless start, there has been positives moving forward, according to head coach Chris Towery.
"We have been executing better in the last few weeks," he said. "We still have to be more consistent in some aspects of the game."
In last week's heartbreaking loss against North Vermilion, the offense was able to outgain the Patriots 217-176. Quarterback Demarcus Collins completed 9-of-14 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.
Matt Johnson led the rushing attack with 58 yards, followed by Collins with 50 yards on the ground.
Travion Moore was the leading receiver for Abbeville with two receptions for 56 yards. Johnson caught three passes for 17 yards and the lone touchdown for the Wildcats.
Notre Dame (5-2, 2-0) enters the game on a two-game win streak where they outscored their opponents 99-0.
The Pioneers offense averages 35.7 points per game and is led by the rushing attack.
Notre Dame has a bevy of running backs that can hurt defenses, most notably, Damon Comeaux, Joe Faulk and Lance Bertrand.
The team rushed for 271 yards in last week’s win against Erath.
Experienced quarterback Brad Stoma is at the helm of the Pioneer offense for the third consecutive year.
Notre Dame is the team in the district, that all other teams look to unseat as the kings of District 6-3A.
“The key for us is to play perfect football,” said Towery. “We will have to execute.”
