Abbeville ends season against West St. Mary
The Abbeville Wildcats close out their season tonight, looking for their first win in two years, when they face West St. Mary.
Abbeville (0-9, 0-4), has fallen short in a few games this season, getting their hopes crushed in the final moments of those contest. Last week, the Wildcats fell to Kaplan 22-14 in the battle for the Russo Trophy.
“Practice has been pretty good this week,” said head coach Chris Towery. “Guys have been playing hard. They are starting to realize that football isn’t just about what happens Friday night, it’s about the preparation all week.”
Quarterback Demarcus Collins leads the Abbeville offense. So far this season Collins has thrown for 380 yards and three touchdowns this year with three interceptions.
In the running game, Matt Johnson leads the team with 386 yards on 70 carries with three touchdowns.
West St. Mary (0-9, 0-4) is also winless on the season, and has not been competitive in the majority of their games this season.
The Wolfpack is losing by an average of 30 points per game, and most recently suffered a 47-12 defeat at the hands of district opponent Erath.
Towery talked about the key for this team to pick up their first victory in his tenure as a coach.
“We have to control the line of scrimmage,” he said. “We have to limit turnovers, and match their physicality up front.”
This has been a tough season for both teams, as they look to end their seasons’ on a high note.
The Wildcats want to avenge a 24-0 home loss suffered to West St.Mary in Week 10 last season.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Baldwin.
