29’ers start season off on wrong foot

The American Legion season got underway Tuesday night for the Gulf Coast Bank Abbeville 29’ers, and the season didn’t quite start the way they would have hoped.
The 29’ers fell to the Lafayette Lions, the American Legion team for Lafayette High, by the final score of 7-3.
“It was good for us to be able to play,” 29’ers head coach Darin Desormeaux said. “We have only had two scrimmages and a quarter of a practice before we had to come out here and play.
“It look like at the beginning of the game the boys didn’t even know each other. They made some uncommon errors, but they looked like they were able to turn it around after the third inning.”
The Lions jumped up early on the 29’ers.
The scored four runs in the top of the first, one run in the top of the second and two runs in the top of the third to take an early 7-0 lead.
The 29’ers were able to score two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 7-2, and they were able to add one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The bottom of the fifth inning was a prime example of how the entire game went for the 29’ers.
The first two batter reached base safely and were advance to third- and second base respectively with no outs in the inning, and the rest of the line-up for the 29’ers were not able to bring them home.
“We just have to come out here next time and do a better job of putting the bat on the ball,” Desormeaux said. “It will take us a little bit, but we will get there.”
One of the bright spots for the 29’ers was the pitching of Wes Meaux.
Meaux came in to relieve the starter Chance Carrier, and in his three innings in relief, Meaux allowed only one base runner and struck out three lions.
Donald Comeaux also pitched a slid seventh inning, allowing two base runners and striking out two batters in the bottom of the seventh inning.
“This is a good team,” Desormeaux said. “Hats off to Lafayette they are a good team, but we have a good team here. I’m hoping that by the time we play again these guys can remember that fact.”
