Village of Maurice promoting literacy

“I am so proud,” said Esther Duff, reading specialist, “it finally happened. My wish came true to spread literacy in our community.
“We were able to present the first 2014 annual Summer Reading Award Program in the Village of Maurice City Hall.”
“In the past, we have been in the churches, schools, and in the businesses. The library is a central location for everyone.”
Duffy thanks her supporters. They include Mayor Wayne Theriot and his staff, Cheryl Bergeron, library branch manager, and Michael M. Sucharski, SVD.
Congratulations to Brock Lopez (Pre-school) to have his mom read 100 books to him. Ashlee Ann Trahan, (grade 4) to read 60 books this summer.
Duffy invites all adults, teen, youth and children in the community to participate. She would like other communities to do the same and promote literacy. September 17, 2012 was been declared Reading Jubilee Day in Maurice.
The first Reading Jubilee parade had the mayor as the grand marshal. There were stations, door prizes , awards and local authors in the park. A fun time was held by everyone.
“We were looking to grow and encourage volunteers to call us at 337-257-8998 with suggestions and support,” said Duffy. “We are asking everyone to read a book or read as a family at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014.”
