Richard “Top” Lawrence Zaunbrecher

GUEYDAN — Richard Lawrence Zaunbrecher, 78 of Gueydan, LA was called from this life on April 26, 2014, while surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born in Gueydan, LA to the late Joseph Zaunbrecher and the late Mary Klien Zaunbrecher on November 1, 1935. He was a member and huge supporter of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, as well as St. Peter’s Catholic School. Richard was very active with the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member for 60 years and warden for 40 years. Richard loved watching wrestling and taking rides around the farm. He enjoyed visiting with all his friends. Richard especially loved when his grandchildren visited with him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 55 wonderful years, June Woods Zaunbrecher of Gueydan, LA; six sons; Richard Zaunbrecher (Trudy) of Maurice, LA, Joel Zaunbrecher (Patricia) of Gueydan, LA, Martin Zaunbrecher (Mary Beth) of Gueydan, LA, Neal Zaunbrecher of Gueydan, LA, Jason Zaunbrecher (Jana) of Roberts Cove, LA, and Blaise Zaunbrecher of Gueydan, LA; two daughters, Monica Zaunbrecher of Gueydan, LA, and Tara Freeman (Theodore) of Ville Platte, LA; three brothers; Charles Zaunbrecher of Gueydan, LA, Ronald Zaunbrecher (Eldie) of Lake Arthur, LA, and William “Bill” Zaunbrecher (Nona) of Gueydan, LA; one sister Dorothy Toups (Ellis) of Gueydan, LA; one sister-in-law, Laura Zaunbrecher of Gueydan, LA; seven grandchildren; Lyle, Jill, Justin, June, Austin, Jessica, and Dominique; twin great grandchildren on the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Joseph and Mary Zaunbrecher, one sister; Mary Leblanc; her husband Nolan; four brothers; Julian Zaunbrecher; his wife Laura Mae; Philip Zaunbrecher; his wife Helen; Wilfred Zaunbrecher; his wife Bessie and Fredrick Zaunbrecher.
Carrying Richard to his final resting place in the Gueydan Cemetery as pallbearers will be Richard Zaunbrecher, Joel Zaunbrecher, Martin Zaunbrecher, Neal Zaunbrecher, Blaise Zaunbrecher and Jason Zaunbrecher. Honorary Pallbearers will be Lyle Zaunbrecher, Justin Zaunbrecher, Austin Zaunbrecher and Theodore Freeman.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Gueydan, LA on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 10:00 AM with Father Corey Campeaux officiating. Burial will follow in the Gueydan Cemetery under the direction of Matthews and Son Funeral Home. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews & Son Funeral Home in Gueydan, LA on Monday, April 28, 2014 from 2:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a Rosary recited at 7:00 PM. Visitation will resume on Tuesday at 8:00 AM until the time of his Funeral Mass.
