Michael James Detraz Jr. "Lil Mike"

ABBEVILLE—Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Michael James Detraz Jr., 39, who died Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Readers for the Mass will be Lisa Detraz and Charlotte Detraz and the gift bearers will be Michael's godparents, Sharyon Boudreaux and Luke Detraz III.
He will be laid to rest at Esther Community Cemetery with Father Neil Pettit officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Sonny Detraz, Dirk Detraz, Troy Carter, Neil Greene, Brett Gunter, and Toby Primeaux. Honorary pallbearers will be Joey Comeaux, Dilan Comeaux, Jason Guidry, Roland Ditch, Luke Detraz III, Leo Hardy, and Jude Richard.
Mike graduated from Vermilion Catholic High School in 1992. He then completed his agricultural aviation pilot training at aviation school in Bainbridge, Georgia. He has been an agricultural aviation pilot for over 20 years. He began his AG-flight career by starting his own flying service under the guidance of his mentor, George Sagrera. He owned and operated Detraz Flying Service for several years before flying for Lewis Broussard. He was also an aerial applicator for T and M Aviation. He currently flew for Klondike Aviation. He enjoyed flying, fishing, and hunting. It was because of this love of hunting that he developed JAM Hunting which catered to numerous hunting adventures both locally and in Mexico and Nicaragua creating lifelong memories and friendships for all of his clients. He was an avid outdoorsman while time spent with his wife, daughters, family and friends was ever so dear to him.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Gabrielle S. Detraz; daughters, Amelia, Jennah, and Madison; parents, Michael "Big Mike" Detraz Sr. and Shawnee LeBlanc Detraz; one sister, Michelle and her husband, Joey Comeaux and their children, Paige and Dilan; his maternal grandmother, Thelma Moore LeBlanc; his mother-in-law, Ruby F. Sherman; and sisters-in-law, Selina and husband, Jason Guidry and Sophie and husband, Roland Ditch.
He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Joseph Louis Sherman; maternal grandfather, Clifford "T-Cliff" LeBlanc; paternal grandparents, Bernice and Luke Detraz Jr.; and his uncle, Mark LeBlanc.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Friday, May 30, 2014 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Vermilion Catholic High School for a memorial scholarship fund in honor of Mike Detraz Jr. (VCHS, 425 Park Avenue, Abbeville, LA 70510).
