Horace “Skip” Matthews, Sr.

GUEYDAN — The family and friends of Horace “Skip” Matthews, 74 of Gueydan, LA are mourning the loss of their loved one who was called from this life on December 28, 2014. Horace was born in Gueydan, LA to the late James Matthews and the late Rosanna Hebert Matthews on November 12, 1940. Horace had a love for the outdoors. He was an avid rabbit hunter. Horace also enjoyed reading, watching sports and western movies. Most of all he loved visiting with family and friends. Horace will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Horace is survived by two sons, Horace (Misty) Matthews, Jr. of Gueydan, LA, Corey “Boss’ (Kelli) Theriot of Gueydan, LA; one daughter, Racheal (Linus) Vallery of Gueydan, LA; one brother, Joseph Joiner, Jr. of California; two sisters, Edna Benjamin of Port Arthur, TX, Carolyn Joiner of Houston, TX; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; James and Rosanna Matthews; one son, Alex James Matthews; one sister, Delores Matthews Taylor; four uncles, Boley Simon, Dalton Hebert, Albert Hebert, Sr., Eli Hebert; four aunts, Hazel Mouton Simon, Oletha Hebert Maxile, Amanda Hebert Living, Alene Hebert Burton.
Carrying Horace to his final resting place in the Gueydan Cemetery as pallbearers will be Carlon “Butch” Campbell, Linus “Shawn” Nunez, Andrew “Bruce” Huntly, Reggie Reed, Jason Maxile, Kerrick Gabrial, Roland Wilson, Jr. and Charles “Charlie” Breaux, Sr. Honorary pallbearers will be Horace Matthews, Jr., Linus Vallery, Corey “Boss” Theriot, Rodney Breaux, Sr. Horace Turner and Joseph Joiner, Jr.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Gueydan, LA on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 12:30 PM with Father Corey Campeaux officiating. Burial will follow in the Gueydan Cemetery under the direction of Matthews and Son Funeral Home. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews & Son Funeral Home in Gueydan, LA on Saturday, January 3, 2015 from 8:30 AM until the time of his Funeral Mass.
