Gertie Marie Hargrave Medus
A Celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015 at a 2:30 PM service in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille for Gertie Marie Hargrave Medus, 88, who peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 26, 2015 in Lafayette. Entombment will follow in Calvary Mausoleum.
Reverend Todd Menard, Pastor of Family Life Church in Lafayette will officiate the service.
She is survived by her son, Gary Edward Medus and his wife Susan McCarron Medus; one granddaughter, Amanda Medus Tubre and her husband, Dr. Ryan Tubre; one grandson, Jacob Edward Medus; and one great-granddaughter, Adelyn Lucille Tubre.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F. Medus; her parents, Ovie Hargrave and Euphemie Hebert Hargrave; one sister, Virgie Buie and one brother, Dudley Hargrave.
A native of Kaplan, Gertie moved to Lafayette, where she received a teaching degree from SLI and married the love of her life, Eddie. She devoted the next 35 years to teaching in the Lafayette Parish School System. Most of her career was spent at Scott Middle School where she taught sixth grade. Teaching was her chosen profession, and sixth grade became her passion. Each child in her class had a name, a personality, a need, and a potential. No government program was needed to motivate her to do everything she could to know and help her students. She had a teacher’s heart. She retired in 1979 and remained an active member of the Lafayette Parish Retired Teachers Association. She also was an active member of St. Edmonds Catholic Church until 2000.
Gertie exhibited strength, faithfulness, and servant hood in every station of her life. She lovingly managed the care of her ailing parents while at the same time taking care of her own husband who was also ill. With the early passing of her brother and sister, “Aunt Gert” was always there for her nieces and nephews with an open heart. She was a faithful and loving wife that shared both the triumphs and trials of life with her husband. As a mother, her love and sacrifice was given to her son freely, without hesitation and sometimes, without justification. She exemplified a true “Mother’s Love”. Gertie loved her daughter-in-law like a daughter, and in return, earned the love of a daughter from her. She welcomed grand parenting as her new chosen profession. She was actively involved in the lives of her grandchildren. Whether it be weekend sleepovers, attending school functions, or after school ice cream dates, grandma was always there. She continued to have a close relationship with her grand children for the rest of her life. She was able to share that love with one more generation, as she held her great-grand daughter in her latter days. Her demeanor was one of humility and compassion throughout the entirety of her life. However, most of all, she was a faithful child of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her passing will be both mourned and celebrated.
Though challenged with memory issues in the final years of her life, Gertie never lost the sweetness of her personality. Special thanks are extended to the staff and residents at Brookdale Assisted Living for their care, kindness, and friendship. Her final weeks were especially blessed through the love, care, and compassion shown to her by Dr. Ken McCarron, her primary care physician and extended family; Donna Moore, Brenda Hulin, and Juanita Knott, her care givers; Hospice of Acadiana, and Nurse Iggy Landry.
The family requests that visitation be observed on Friday, July 31, 2014 from 11:00 am until time of service at the Martin & Castille Funeral Home’s DOWNTOWN location.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Medus’s name to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Suite 200, Lafayette, LA. 70503.
