Dolores Cecile Gros Young

ABBEVILLE — Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Abbeville, Louisiana, for Dolores Cecile Gros Young, 89, who died at Lafayette General Hospital on Monday, February 15, 2016.  Interment will be at St. Paul Cemetery, Abbeville, Louisiana.
The Reverend Louis J. Richard, Pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, will serve as celebrant.  Pallbearers will be her grandsons Clay Young, Andre Young, Beau Young, Andrew Thompson, John Thompson, Douglas “Biff” Koonce, Everett Young, Jarrett Young, Jed Simon, and Jacob Simon.  Gospel readings will be given by granddaughters Rachel T. Pinckard and Ada S. LeDoux.  Gift Bearers will be granddaughters Mikela K. Stutzman, Meraiah Young, and Rebecca Simon.
Dolores was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, on September 8, 1926.  She was the daughter of Leo Joseph Gros, Sr., and Ada Jeanne Landry Gros.  She graduated from Mount Carmel High School, Lafayette, Louisiana, and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now ULL).  Dolores became a licensed pilot at the age of 16 and was the youngest pilot to solo in the Acadiana area.  She was a certified airman of the Civil Aeronautics Administration during World War II.  While in college she was a member of the staff of The Vermilion, the SLI college student newspaper.  After college she worked as an office administrator with her husband at Roy Young, Inc. and then with her sons at Acadiana Shell and Limestone, Inc. until her retirement. Dolores enjoyed being a part of the Mount Carmel Heights neighborhood families where she and her friends shared time together watching their children grow up and attend Mount Carmel Elementary School and graduate from Vermilion Catholic High School in Abbeville.  She was a past member of Beta Sigma Phi and was involved in volunteering with friends at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.  Writing was a pleasure to Dolores and all her friends and family enjoyed receiving handwritten notes and cards over the years.
Dolores is survived by her four children and their spouses, fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren, which include Roy Edward Young, Jr. (Eddie), his wife Kellie Michaud Young and their three sons Clay, Andre, and Beau; Marie Marleen Y. Thompson, her husband Thomas B. Thompson and their children Rachel, Andrew, and John; Roger Kim Young, his wife Starlett Trahan Young and their children Mikela, Douglas, Everett, Jarrett, and Meraiah; and, Judy Kay Y. Simon, her husband Robert James Simon (Bob) and their children Jed, Ada, Jacob, and Rebecca.  Dolores is also survived by a brother Leo Joseph Gros, Jr. (Sonny) and his wife Tara of Lafayette, a brother-in-law, Joseph Earl Young and his wife Janet of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Young of Memphis, Tennessee. 
Dolores was preceded in death by the father of their children Roy E. Young, Sr., her parents Leo Joseph Gros, Sr., and Ada Jeanne Landry Gros, and a brother-in-law Carl E. Young.
Visitation will be observed at David Funeral at 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m.  A Rosary will be prayed at 1:00 p.m. at David Funeral Home.
The family appreciates the staff of Eastridge Assisted Living for providing comfort and support in Dolores’ last years.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to the Sisters of Mount Carmel at Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, P. O. Box 1160, Lacombe, LA  70445, or to Mount Carmel Elementary School or Vermilion Catholic High School.
