Agnes “Jane” Matthews

GUEYDAN — Mrs. Agnes “Jane” Matthews passed away on April 17, 2014 surrounded by her loving family, at the beautiful age of 88. Mrs. Jane was born to the late Alvin Landry, Sr. and Lelia Meaux Landry on November 13, 1925. She was a homemaker, who devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. Mrs. Jane was a devote member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was very active in her community and was a member of several organizations including the Gueydan Museum, Gueydan Chamber of Commerce, Woodmen of the World, Help Feed the Elderly and Krewe de Royale. She loved go to Holly Beach and play bingo. She was a Licensed Florist and loved flowers.
Mrs. Jane is survived by her son, Harold J. Matthews and his wife, Bell of Jennings, LA; her daughter, Sheryl Portie and her husband, Billy of Gueydan, LA; her two special grandchildren, Kevin Matthews of Jennings, LA and Laurel Portie of Seattle, WA; and her two sisters, Gladys Sonnier of Kaplan, LA and Helen Benoit (Will) of Crowley, LA;
Mrs. Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Lelia Landry; her beloved husband, Nelis Matthews; one brother, Alvin Landry, Jr.; her two sisters, Laura L. Hebert and Mary Lou Bufford; and her daughter-in-law, Hattie Matthews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Gueydan on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 3:00 PM with Father Charles McMillin and the Very Reverend Anthony Fontenot officiating. Burial will follow in the Gueydan Cemetery. The Matthews family request visitation to be held at Matthews & Son Funeral Home in Gueydan on Monday, April 21st from 2:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a Rosary recited by Father Corey Campeaux at 7:00 PM Visitation will resume on Tuesday, April 22nd at 8:00 AM until the time of her funeral Mass.
Carrying Mrs. Jane to her eternal resting place will be Skip Gardiner, Allen Mayer, Reverend Joseph Boutin, Francis Romero, Billy Portie and Ronnie M. LeMaire.
